"Ghosts"
By Toni Macdonald

A ghost, a ghost
Hiding from view

Though, not really
Hidden
Able to be seen
By me and by you

Then, just as quick as
If it were only
A wisp of fog,
(A fallen cloud),
It is gone

Was it ever really
There at all?

No one can be certain
For that is
The nature
Of ghosts

Have you ever
Seen a ghost?
A girl asks her mother
As they’re out in the garden
Preparing it for
The coming
Winter’s frost

I am not certain
That I have
Seen a ghost,
Or any
Proof
Of their existence,
Says her mother

Though I believe I have,
(Seen proof),
Her mother continues

What kind of proof?
Asks her daughter, excitedly
What have you seen?

Asks this girl, very curious
About anything
Ghostly

I was sitting by our garden,
(This garden),
Her mother replies,
On the deck
Relaxing after
Working so hard
On the gardening

I had just finished
Hoeing out
The garden
And so had
Left the shovel out
On the ground

You know the shovel, honey
The kind I use for spring
They’re lightweight
For work when
The ground is soft and light

I watched that shovel
Move straight across
The ground
In a strong
Gust of wind

I don’t believe the wind alone
Could do that

I don’t believe it could
Move the shovel
Along the ground
As if it were
Skating on ice

I suppose the wind
Could
With just
A strong gust
Along a flat piece of ground

Like I said,
I can’t be certain

Though I believe it was
A ghost

Do you believe me?
That I saw proof of
A ghost

Most definitely!
The girl,
(Her girl),
Exclaims

I’ve always believed
In ghosts
