Out Of Order Tales From The Sea by Billy
|
With two gale warnings and one potential storm system later in the week our morning departure closes in. The long
daily grind of the day fishing season has come to an end and after what seemed an eternity my break between
seasons has too elapsed. Excitement is understated pacing the house, trying to get affairs in order and
remembering to call mom to tell her I'm off to sea.
2009 has started on a somber note as yesterday they recovered the body of two Glouster fisherman, from what little
I know the stability of the boat was lost, F?V Patriot I believe rolled over with a large load of fish hauling his net back.
It happened fast enough they did not have time to get into survival suits. The Coast Guard likes to see us get in it
and zipped up under 60 seconds, most of us have made sure to get faster at it than that! Sometimes 59 seconds is
a lifetime and 60 is just dead.
Treat the ocean and your boat like a lady. Give her respect, nurturing and speak always with kind words and tones.
To do otherwise, like a lady she will be sure to show you her displeasure in many different ways.
The boats ready to go, crews hyped and about noon today we drop the lines and head out. This for me is the
feeling I once had as a child on the night before Christmas. What tomorrow's treasure will be there's no way of
knowing. Like life everything is a gamble, sometimes your money, sometimes the house's but in the end it's chance,
luck and muscle.
If your looking for me I'll be on the other side of the Eastern horizon.
